5 Reasons You Should Visit Chinatown Prior To Chinese New Year

It is that time of the year again when Chinatown is covered in red (and roosters). The roads are closed from 6 pm onwards and the streets come alive after 7 pm. Can't find a reason to visit Chinatown this New Year? Let us help you out! Below are some of the reasons on why you should visit Chinatown at least once during this festive season.

1)    Precious Moments With Your Loved Ones
Are you guilty of not spending enough time with your loved ones? Well, now you have a chance (to make up for it)! Visiting Chinatown during Chinese New Year is different from your usual trip there. The roads are closed at night and the streets are well decorated and brightly lit. You can also expect to see many roosters around there as this is the year of the Rooster.

So how do you enjoy this beautiful moment with your loved ones? Selfie, Wefie or just plain photo taking, this is a good time to start saving your 2017 memories. Be entertained by the nightly stage shows at Kreta Ayer Square or shop till you drop at the festive street bazaar, Chinatown is a must-go-to for all those looking for a great night out! You can also check out ChinatownFestivals for more information about the Chinese New Year celebrations.

2)    You Are Still Lacking Traditional Chinese New Year Decorations
Look around your home, is there enough red in it? Love it or hate it, red colour is a must for Chinese New Year as it symbolises good fortune and joy. Of course, you don't have to get a red sofa or paint your walls red specifically for the occasion! All you need is just the traditional Chinese New Year decorations to spice up your home for this joyous occasion. Almost every household celebrating Chinese New Year will have their home nicely decorated. Some may even leave the decorations up throughout the year (If you've watched Home Decor Survivor 摆家乐 before, you'll know that's true!).

The festive street bazaar at Chinatown is the one-stop place for all your home decor needs. You can find paper cuttings, door couplets, potted plants, plenty of rooster plush toys and even a mahjong bracelet to help you win big in mahjong. Take a look at some of the photos we've taken while we were there!

3)    Ever Seen Your Surname On The Red Packets Before?
It is time to up your game with the surname red packets. Nope, you don't have to customize it and wait about 2 weeks for it. You can get it immediately off the shelves at Chinatown, provided that you can find the surnames you're looking for.

The red packets come in different colours and different surnames. It costs just $2 for a packet of red packets and $5 for 3 packets.

4)    You Love Countdowns

Trying to stay awake (守岁) to bring longevity for your parents? Why stay at home when you can join the countdown party in Chinatown! With live performances and a rousing countdown celebration with MediaCorp artistes in the heart of Chinatown, staying awake has never been easier.

5)    Missed It And You'll Have To Wait For The Next Year
Yeap, miss it this year and you'll have to wait till next year for the next celebration. Worst still, you may have to wait for another 12 years to see rooster decorations in Chinatown! The streets light-up will be from 7th January to 25th February, more than a month for you to plan your visit. So you better don't miss it!
